Munnar is a 590 km inter-state run that crosses from Tamil Nadu into Kerala, which means a Kerala commercial entry permit on top of the usual TN paperwork. We buy this before dispatch — Kerala's border enforcement at Bodimettu and Kumily is strict, and an improperly permitted vehicle is genuinely turned back.
The approach most groups take is via Theni and the Bodimettu ghat, a climb through eucalyptus and cardamom that opens onto the tea plateau. The last section is narrow and steep in places, so the 10+1 SWB is our recommendation for groups of eight or fewer. Larger groups run the 12+1 comfortably; the 16+1 LWB is workable but slower on the estate roads above Munnar town.
Force Urbania Rental for the Chennai to Munnar Route
Kerala is the state where a properly permitted Force Urbania rental matters most. Enforcement at Bodimettu and Kumily is strict and improperly permitted vehicles are genuinely turned back at the barrier, so verify permits are costed into any Urbania hire quote you compare. On the vehicle itself: the upper estate roads above Munnar toward Top Station and Kundala are narrow, so we recommend the 10+1 SWB for groups of eight or fewer. The 12+1 MWB runs the route regularly and is entirely comfortable.
About Munnar
Munnar sits at 1,600 metres where three mountain streams meet, and the tea estates that surround it were planted by the British from the 1870s onward. Eravikulam National Park above the town protects the largest surviving population of Nilgiri tahr, and its Neelakurinji flowers bloom once every twelve years. Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point and Kundala Lake form the standard upper circuit, with Top Station on the Tamil Nadu border giving the widest view over the Western Ghats.
