Best Time to Visit Coorg: A Month-by-Month Guide
Coorg is good most of the year, but what you see changes completely by season — from March coffee blossom to the roaring monsoon falls. Here is how to pick your month.
October to February — the peak season
This is the window most people mean by "the best time to visit Coorg". The monsoon has cleared, the hills are at their greenest, and daytime temperatures sit comfortably between 15 and 25°C with crisp mornings. The Cauvery is still full, so Abbey Falls and the Dubare river are at their best, and the estate roads are firm and safe.
It is also the busiest and priciest window, particularly the Christmas–New Year fortnight and long weekends, when Madikeri accommodation books out weeks ahead. If you are travelling then, confirm both your stay and your vehicle early.
March to May — coffee blossom and warmth
The coffee blossom, usually in March after the first pre-monsoon showers, blankets the estates in fragrant white flowers for a few days — a genuinely special sight if you time it, though the exact dates shift year to year. Days are warmer but Coorg's elevation keeps it far milder than the plains. This is a quieter, cheaper window than the winter peak.
June to September — the monsoon
Coorg in the monsoon is spectacular and divisive. The waterfalls thunder, the mist sits in the valleys, and the greenery is unreal — but roads get slippery, leeches appear on estate walks, and some viewpoints close in. Mandalpatti and the higher tracks are often restricted. If dramatic scenery over hiking is your priority, and you do not mind rain, it is a beautiful and inexpensive time to go.
Getting there
Coorg has no airport or railway of its own, so almost everyone arrives by road. Mysore is the closest gateway at about 120 km (three hours); Bangalore is around 260 km (five to six hours) via Kushalnagar. A group is far better off with its own vehicle here — the estates, falls and viewpoints are dispersed and public transport in Kodagu is thin.
